This girl of mine… She was born a dog-lover. I remember her as a baby, being fascinated by all of the dogs that crossed our path. When she was just two, we were at a park and she spotted a dog in the distance and went running for it. I went running after her in terror – as the dog she was about to “meet” was a giant Great Dane. One that could have eaten her in one bite. Fortunately, the Great Dane was as gentle as a lamb and my little one got to add yet another dog to her ever growing list of dog friends.
Now that she is almost six, one of her favorite things to do is to go to our local library and read to a dog. We always have to get to the library early so that she has time to pick out just the right book (it must be about dogs!) and then she settles in next to the dog of the day and begins reading… It is one of my favorite things to watch – my girl and her two loves, books and dogs. She takes her job seriously, only pausing occasionally to pat the dog. She reads in a soft, quiet, steady voice and more often than not, the dog ends up lying its head in her lap…
This is my story. The story of my girl. My dog-lover.
She starts preparing as we are walking into the library – the book in her hands here is called “Dogs for Kids” and it is basically an encyclopedia about all of the different dog breeds. She reads this book over and over again and falls in love with a new breed just about every day!
When it is her turn to read to the dog (in this case, a black lab named “MK”) she gets right to work – the dog gets a pat on the head and then she starts reading. Each child is given 15 minutes with the dog and my girl *always* wants to read her whole book to her dog friend! Then, when her turn is over, she takes a minute to give the dog some love. Every time, as we are leaving the library she turns to me and asks “When do I get to read to another dog?”
That is my story for this month. I hope you enjoyed this little peek into our ordinary days…
